PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for a diesel engine which can reduce the volume of emitted NOX even though exhaust gas is restricted. SOLUTION: An exhaust throttle valve 13 is fitted in an exhaust pipe 6 for a Diesel engine 1. During cold operation, an ECU 12 closes the exhaust throttle valve 13 so as to increase the load of the engine 1 for increasing the loss of cooling water in order to shorten the warm-up time of the engine. The ECU 12 compensates a fuel injection timing, simultaneously with the operation of the exhaust throttle valve 13. This compensation for the fuel injection timing is a compensation toward the spark retardation side. A compensating value for the fuel injection timing is determined in accordance with at least a load and a temperature of the engine cooling water.
