PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the viscosity of a carbon-contg. filter cake produced as a by-product in the gasification of a heavy oil and to provide an industrially effective treating method for the cake by mixing water and a dispersant into an unburned substance produced in the gasification. SOLUTION: The dispersant is pref. an acrylic dispersant. Among acylic dispersants, an ammonium acrylate copolymer is pref., and a sodium acrylate- ester copolymer is esp. pref. Pref., the dispersant is added in an amt. of 0.2-5 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt. solid content of the unburned substance. Having an improved viscosity, the carbon-contg. filter cake compsn, can be treated by charging it into a cement production kiln through its inlet port, e.g. by pressure sending with a centrifugal cochlear pump. Since the baking temp. in the kiln is as high as 1,450 deg.C, the compsn. can be treated by complete combustion.
