PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably and economically manufacture, with high productivity, a stock sheet for a surface treated steel sheet for can, ranging from a soft material to a hard material, by means of compact, single continuous annealing equipment. SOLUTION: This manufacturing method is based on the knowledge that stock sheets for surface treated steel sheet for can, ranging from T1 to T6 degree of refining, can be selectively manufactured by properly controlling cooling and overaging conditions after heating and soaking at the time of continuous annealing. In this manufacturing method, a cold rolled sheet of a low carbon aluminum killed steel having a composition containing <=0.1 wt.% C and 0.001-0.015% N is heated and soaked to and at a temperature not lower than the recrystallization temperature by continuous annealing, subjected to primary cooling down to 350 to 480 deg.C at (>100 to <300) deg.C/sec average cooling rate, subjected, without reheating, to overaging treatment, and successively subjected to final cooling, followed by temper rolling. In this case, steel sheets of dissimilar degree of refining can be properly manufactured by practically equalizing the thermal hysteresis from the primary cooling onward at continuous annealing independently of the desired degree of refining of the steel sheet and altering the soaking temperature at continuous annealing according to the desired degree of refining of the steel sheet.
