PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the formation of a fold, in an apparatus for coating a material web such as paper during running with a liquid coating medium, by adjusting the surface characteristics of first and second corresponding rollers so that the material web performs relative motion with respect to the corresponding rollers. SOLUTION: A material web 12 allowed to run in an L-direction is successively trained over first and second corresponding rollers 14 and 16 at first to be guided and, during this period, coating is applied to the first surface of the web 12 by the coating device 18 arranged corresponding to the first corresponding roller 14 and coating thickness is leveled by a leveling device and/or a quantity control device 22 comprising a doctor knife arranged corresponding to the second corresponding roller 16. Herein, the surface 14a of the first corresponding roller 14 is formed so as to have the coefficient of friction less than that of the surface 16a of the second corresponding roller 16 and the surface characteristics of the first and second corresponding rollers 14 and 16 are set so that the material web 12 performs relative motion at least with respect to the first corresponding roller 14.
