PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To selectively separate a harmful hydrophobic organic compound in an aq. solution from water at a low pressure by treating the aq. solution containing the hydrophobic organic compound with a membrane composed of a cellulose having a specific value of water permeating performance at a specific pressure. SOLUTION: As cellulose, a natural cellulose such as a bacterial cellulose, a regenerated cellulose, a saponified cellulose and the like are listed. Particularly, the regenerated cellulose is preferably used as a base material because the regenerated cellulose is the most hydrophilic. The regenerated cellulose to be used preferably has 0.1-50 ml/m2.hr.mmHg water permeating performance, and the treating pressure is controlled preferably to a low pressure of <=10 kgf/cm2. Further, the temp. of the separation may be in the range enough to keep the aq. solution state, for example, 0-80 deg.C. The hydrophobic organic compound to be the object is a halogen based organic compound, trihalomethanes or pesticides that have about solubility of <=5 wt.% in water.
