PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst system using the flow-through radiation barrier, and to provide the method for preparing hydrogen cyanide by using the system. SOLUTION: In this catalyst system, (A) a reactant 1 containing at least one hydrocarbon, at least one nitrogen-containing gas and at least one oxygen containing gas is fed into a reactor 2, (B) the reactant is preheated by sending the reactant to a reaction zone 4 through a radiation barrier 3 which contains at least one piece of a flow-through ceramic material and is at least partially heated by absorbing at least a portion of the radiation energy formed at the reaction zone 4, (C) hydrogen cyanide is produced by reacting the reactant at a temp. of 800-1400 deg.C in the presence of platinum group metal catalyst 5 placed in the reaction zone, (D) the temp. of the reaction zone is monitored, and (E) the oxygen content in the reactant is controlled and the reaction temp. is maintained within the range of 800-1400 deg.C.
