The present invention provides new methods for preparation of various compounds that comprise alicyclic groups with nitrogen or sulfur as ring members, including 2,5-disubstituted tetrahydrothiophenes, 2,5-disubstituted pyrrolidines, 2,6-disubstituted thianes, 2,6-disubstituted hexahydropyridines, 2,7-disubstituted thiepanes, 2,7-disubstituted hexahydroazepines, 2,8-disubstituted thiocanes and 2,8-disubstituted octahydroazocines. The invention further provides novel compounds and pharmaceutical compositions and therapeutic methods that comprise such compounds and compositions.
