[Also in Division A4] Band sections of predetermined length are fed into a band guide surrounding a package of expansible material, compressed by a plunger 17 in a baling chamber, and the ends of each band section are interconnected before the package is allowed to expand to tighten the band. Band feeding and cutting.-A band 27 having recesses 96 defining the sections, Fig. 7, is fed vertically downwards, Fig. 3, from a coil between pairs of pulley wheels 42, 43 mounted on pivoted levers 35, 36 and driven by a pinion 56 through gears 54, 54<SP>1</SP>. The minimum distance between the two wheels 42 and the two wheels 43 is determined by spacer and spring devices 59, 63 and 61, 64. The band is fed through a slot 92 in a cutting device 88, Fig. 5, having sliding catches 93 which engage in the recesses 96 in the band. The device 88 is then carried downwardly on columns 89 by the band against the action of springs 90 and engages switches (not shown) to stop the feed and activate a piston 97 which pivots a lever 99, causing blades 106, 107 to cut the band. The lever also moves slides 111, the bevelled ends of which engage in recesses 113 in the catches 93 to move them apart. The grip on the band is accordingly released and the springs 90 expand to push the device 88 upwardly. The piston reverses the movement of lever 99, the arms 111 initially remaining stationary. The catches 93 are then released ready to engage the next recesses in the band. Band guiding.-The band is fed into a guide 116, Fig. 1, which has doors (119, 120), (Fig. 2), which may be opened to remove manually the band end. The band passes along a pivotable guide 118 and into guides 133, 30, 29, 31, 134 in the baling chamber. The position of the corner guide 31 is determined by the final position of the plunger 17 which carries the guide 31 against the action of a cylinder 131. The guide 29 is pivoted at 128 and is swung out of the path of the plunger 17 by a piston-rod 130. After the band ends are interlocked, an end plate 12 of the baling chamber is raised and the package is pushed out by the plunger 17. An abutment 126 on the end plate 12 pushes the pivotable guide 118 aside. To bind a package at more than one location, a plurality of band sections may be fed at the same time into corresponding guides. Alternatively, the banding apparatus may be displaced along the package. All the walls confining the compressed package may be movable. A wrapper may be applied before or after banding. Air nozzles may be provided to clean the chamber after discharge of the package. |
