PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a solid titanium catalytic component capable of polymerizing an olefin in high activity and in high stereoregularity by using a specific aromatic aldehyde. SOLUTION: This solid titanium catalytic component containing (B) titanium, (C) magnesium, (D) a halogen, and (E) an electron donor is obtained using (A) an aromatic aldehyde of the formula (R1 is H, a halogen or hydrocarbon, or a plurality of R1 are mutually bound to form a ring, or a plurality of R1 are condensed together; (m) is 0-5; (n) is 1-6; (m+n)=6; when (n) is >=2, CHO may be substituted on any site). Specifically, it is preferable that the objective catalytic component is obtained by the following procedure: a solid containing the components B and C is first prepared, and then mutually brought into contact with the components A and E; wherein the component A to be used is pref. phthalaldehyde, isophthalaldehyde, terephthalaldehyde or the like.
