PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate the holding of handrails by a wide variety of users by providing a lower handrail to be moved in a circulating manner at an equal speed to that of an upper handrail. SOLUTION: A handrail is of double structure comprising an upper handrail 8u and a lower handrail 8d, and users large in difference in height including children and seniors can easily hold the handrail, and further, their posture at a tread 6 is improved, and they are safe even in a sudden stop. Since the lower handrail 8d is installed in a recess formed in an inside plate 7, and troubles caused by providing the lower handrail 8d at a lower position, for example, inconveniences of sitting on the handrail can be avoided. In addition, an upper handrail drive unit Hdu and a lower handrail drive unit hdd are driven by a same driving machine 3 through the upper handrail 8u and the lower handrail 8d are individually driven by the upper handrail drive unit Hdu and the lower handrail drive unit HDd, and thus, the structural synchronization is effected between the moving speeds of both handrails, and the moving speed of the handrails and the moving speed relative to the tread 6.
