PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely confirm display in every posture of a camera and to prevent a battery from being wastefully consumed by setting the duration of the illumination of an external display means in accordance with the posture of the camera. SOLUTION: A microcomputer 1 decides the posture of a camera body, based on output from a posture detection circuit 7, and controls focus detection, the setting of an exposure condition and the setting of the duration of the illumination by an illuminator 14 for illuminating the external liquid crystal display device 13. When the posture of the camera is normal, the illumination by the illuminator 14 is continued during the first time from performing specified operation, and when it is the posture other than the normal one, the illumination by the illuminator 14 is continued during the second time (>the first time) from performing the specified operation. Therefore, the display contents of the device 13 can be surely confirmed even in the dark in the posture of the camera other than the normal one, where it takes long time to confirm the display contents thereof. In the normal posture where it takes short time to confirm the display contents, the illumination is turned off in a short time so that the battery may be prevented from being wastefully consumed.
