PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display reproduction time of a recorded system steam file and to improve usability by a user by graphically displaying the data information on the system stream file and selecting this file by a button. SOLUTION: A multiplexing part 18 generates a system stream from the video and audio streams, and the system stream is recorded on a recording medium 21 as a file. A microcomputer 17 of an MPEG camera 20 reads the file information on the system stream out of the medium 21 and retrieves the recorded bit rate information. The bit rate information is integrated with the value that is decided by an MPEG1 standard, and a sound bit rate is added to the integrated bit rate information. Thus, the bit rate of the system stream is decided. The file size is read out of an FAT and the file reproduction time is calculated from the file size and the bit rate information on the system stream.
