[Also in Division C5] The invention comprises compounds of formula wherein X is a branched or straight chain C 6-17 alkyl or acyl radical, R is H or C 1-7 alkyl and M is an alkali metal, ammonium or substituted ammonium radical. The compounds may be prepared from phenol by acylation with a carboxylic acid chloride, subjecting the product to Fries' rearrangement with AlCl 3 , separating the isomers, sulphonating the product, if desired, after reduction of the acyl group to an alkyl group, neutralizing the sulphonic group and then acylating the product.
