PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video camera having a normal mode where the TV images are recorded and a low speed/high resolution mode where the images are recorded for a device that has a reproducing function of high resolution. SOLUTION: A CCD element 2 applies a full pixel read system and has (horizontal 1080×vertical 720) pixels per frame which are more than (horizontal 720×vertical 480) pixels of an NTSC system. In a normal mode, the element 2 reads (horizontal 1080×vertical 480) pixels in 1/2 horizontal period of the NTSC system and omits both sides to generate an image of (horizontal 720×vertical 480) pixels. In a low speed/high resolution mode, (horizontal 1080×vertical 720) pixels are read out of the element 2 in a period of (2×2) times as long as a vertical scanning period of the NTSC system. Then the element 2 can generate (horizontal 1440×vertical 960) pixels, i.e., an image of pixels double the NTSC system in both horizontal and vertical directions via the interpolation.
