1,260,343. Glass melting furnace. P.P.G. INDUSTRIES Inc. 9 Sept., 1969 [10 Sept., 1968], No. 44508/69. Heading F4B. [Also in Division C1] A glass melting tank heated by side positioned burners 19 has a cooled skimmer 24 extending at an angle to the side walls of the tank which serves to deflect surface scum and foam towards one or both of side positioned skim kilns 20. The skimmer 24 may be V-shaped in plan and comprise two U-shaped refractory metal pipes, one extending from each side wall, cooling water passing into an upper arm of the U and emerging from the lower arm which in use is immersed in the molten glass. In use, a mass of glass will solidify around the skimmers. Each skim kiln 20 has an aperture 32 in its wall through which the surface material flows into a drain 36. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the skimmer is constructed of two concentric tubes the cooling water being introduced along the central pipe and discharged through the outer jacket. |
