PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the quality of an output image by increasing the number of lines which can be represented when hexagonal cells which are not regularly hexagonal on a square lattice is applied to a printer having a relatively small number of gray scales. SOLUTION: Hexagonal cells 1-1, 1-2 and 1-3 of 24 (=(5×5)-(1×1)) pixels having two sides (oblique side) after a couple of opposite corners of a 5×5 square cell are omitted are formed and those three hexagonal cells 1-1, 1-2 and 1-3 are combined to form one half-tone cell 1. The number of gradations that this half-tone cell can represent is 24×3=72 and the number gray scales which can be represented when this is applied to a printer of 600 dpi is 120.
