摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make an anode conductor of a material resistant to reduction in an FED so as to reduce gas generation during use. SOLUTION: This FED 1 comprises an insulative cathode substrate 2 having FECs 5 formed thereon and an envelope 4 formed of an insulative and translucent anode substrate 3 having anodes 11 formed thereon. The FEC 5 emits an electron from an emitter 10 by an electric field generated in a gate electrode 8. A shielding film 12 is formed over the inner surface of the anode substrate 3. The shielding film 12 is made of an insulative material having high resistance such as SiN, TiO2 or SiON, wherein gas such as H2O or O is discharged in a small quantity. The shielding film 12 shields gas contained in the anode substrate 3. Metal anode conductors 14 each having a translucent window 13 are attached to the inner surface of the shielding film 12. The metal anode conductors 14 are covered with a phosphor layer 15. The metallic anode conductor cannot be deposited by reduction. The FEC 5 cannot be adversely influenced by deficient insulation or the like. Thus, it is possible to enhance stability of the FED 1 so as to achieve a long lifetime.
