PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the number of input times of syllables and the number of selection times of recognition candidates smaller than the number of syllables constituting words and to save labor of manipulation by deciding whether the number of the kinds of the syllables following the recognition candidates of the respective word candidates determined by a retrieval means exceeds a prescribed number or not. SOLUTION: A CPU 21 decides that the selected single syllable candidate is a single syllable when this single syllable candidate is selected. The result of the recognition is displayed on an LCD 12. A word matching section 27 collates the inputted single syllable and the words registered in a word dictionary 24a and selects the word having the single syllable at the top as a word candidate. The CPU 21 makes decision as to whether the single syllable following the single syllable in the selected word candidate exceeds 1, which is the prescribed number, or not. If the number of the word candidate exceeds 1, the characteristic parameter of the inputted next single syllable is extracted and the extracted characteristic parameter and the single syllable standard patterns stored in a single syllable dictionary 24b are compared and recognized.
