PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize a device, also to suppress the heat from a light source by reducing power consumption and also to pick up a clear still image. SOLUTION: This microscope has two lighting systems which are a lighting system 5A for picking up moving images and a lighting system 5B for picking up a still picture, and lighting is performed with the system 5A for picking up moving images of low luminance because an image that is bright and clear is not needed at the time of picking up a moving image that needs positioning of a subject W. Also, when observation is performed, a clear image can be projected by performing momentary lighting with the system 5B for picking up a still picture of high luminance. Besides, because lighting is not continuously performed with high-intensity light, only a small amount of power consumption and heat output is needed. Also, it is possible to illuminate darkly at the time of picking up an moving image and to illuminate brightly at the time of picking up a still picture by using one lighting system that can adjust luminance.
