PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correct the color slurring of the image reader which uses three line sensors of R, G, and B by using simple constitution. SOLUTION: Two longitudinally adjacent pixels of outputs of sensors 101 and 103 of R and B having read a document having a black line in the direction of the line sensors are multiplied by coefficients (1-p) and (p), and (1-q) and (q) and added, and the addition results and the output of the sensor 102 of G are passed through an input masking circuit 127 and a color space converting circuit 128 to decide a chromatic or achromatic color by a color deciding circuit 133, so that the count value of a chromatic color decision signal IRO is sent to a CPU 135. The CPU detects (p) and (q) minimizing the count value while changing the said (p) and (q). The detected (p) and (q) are used to read the document, thereby correcting the color slurring.
