PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid the occurrence of unevenness in gap length and to appropriately read a signal by providing a pair of conductor parts which supply a sense current to a magnetoresistance effect element, using a soft magnetic thin film as at least one of a pair of magnetic shield members and disposing the thin film at a position, where it does not overlap the conductor parts. SOLUTION: In an MR head 1, a pair of magnetic shield members comprise a 1st substrate 2 and a soft magnetic thin film 6, the planar shape of the 1st substrate 2 and a 2nd substrate 8 is formed into a nearly rectangular thin sheet shape, and the upper edge face is used as a tape sliding surface 9. This tape sliding surface 9 is a circular-arc shaped curved surface having a prescribed curvature. A lower gap film 3 and an upper gap film 5 form an intershield gap between the magnetic shield members and an MR element 4 is held between the gap films 3, 5. The 1st substrate 2 is disposed on the trading side, and the soft magnetic thin film 6 is also disposed on the trading side so as to reduce the partial wear of the thin film 6.
