PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the amount of a dissolved gas which is present in a liquid crystal layer in a liquid crystal display device using substrates composed of flexible polymer films. SOLUTION: Fine powder of zeolite with a grain diameter far smaller than that of a spacer 5 and with pores having <=1.5 nm diameter at an opening, is made to coexist in a liquid crystal layer 4 as an adsorbent 10 for a dissolved gas. In a liquid crystal display device, since gaseous oxygen or the like in the atmosphere, which permeates plastic film substrates 1 and is mixed with the liquid crystal layer, is selectively adsorbed by the zeolite (molecules of a liquid crystal material 4a are not adsorbed), the generation of bubbles in the liquid crystal layer is prevented. Further, the contamination of the liquid crystal material is prevented as no impurity comes out of the zeolite.
