PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the color reproducibility of image pickup signals formed by a CCD image sensor provided with a color filter. SOLUTION: A polarity judgement circuit 10 judges the polarity of respective color difference signals and supplies the polarity judgement output to a gain setting circuit 9. The chrominance signals of the respective color difference signals are indicated on two-dimensional coordinates for which an R-Y signal is presented on a vertical axis and a B-Y signal is presented on a horizontal axis by the angle and scalar amount. The gain setting circuit 9 sets the gain of the respective color difference signals for the respective quadrants of the two-dimensional coordinates corresponding to the polarity judgement output from the polarity judgement circuit 10. Respective multipliers 7 and 8 amplify the respective color difference signals by the gain set by the gain setting circuit 9 and output them. Thus, since the respective color difference signals are amplified by the gain set for the respective quadrants of the two-dimensional coordinates, the color reproducibility is improved.
