A grating system (10) includes a plurality of elongate load-bearing members of a hollow construction (12), with predetermined portions of each member being reinforced for improved tensile and compressive load carrying abilities, the members being spaced from each other and arranged parallel to each other. The system also includes a plurality of elongate connecting members (14) which are connected to the load-bearing members (12), the connecting members (14) arranged transversely to the load-bearing members (12) and parallel to each other, to form a grate. The invention also relates to a method of manufacturing a modular grating system.
