An improved color picture tube (10) has a tensioned mask (24) and support frame (40) assembly. Each of the mask and the support frame is rectangular and has two long sides (32, 34; 42, 44) that parallel a central major axis (X) thereof and two short sides (36, 38; 46, 48) that parallel a central minor axis (Y) thereof. The improvement comprises the frame including two first members (50, 52), paralleling the major axis, and two second members (60, 62), attached to the ends of said first members, paralleling the minor axis. Each of the second members includes a pinched section (70) that elongates it.
