A sensor for quantitative and qualitative determination of substances absorbed / adsorbed on a substrate (1) from an aqueous or gaseous flow (8) has a substrate made of a fiber, woven , felted or tangled filament web of semiconducting material and/or activated carbon, capable of electrical resistance heating when energized from an external circuit (4,5,6). An Independent claim is also included for a process of identifying and quantifying pollutant species by monitoring such properties as electrical conductivity, capacitance, and temperature during timed thermal desorption from an absorbent substrate. The substrate is contained so that the contaminated flow either impinges upon, or passes through it, and has an average pore size of the order of less than 50 nm. Operating temperatures are -200 to +1000 deg C. The substrate is preferably water wettable , but may be impregnated with a lipophilic material such as silicon oil. Catalytic materials such as alkali metal or alkaline earth metal iodides, noble metal, transition metal complexes, salts or porous elemental forms may be incorporated into the substrate; near group VIII metals are particularly preferred.
