The invention relates to a method for testing gas valves for tightness. According to preart, the gas valves which lead to a gas burner are either all checked for tightness before a demand for heat, or they are all checked after a demand for heat. This test for tightness is disadvantageous since, according to preart, the time for conducting it requires more than one minute. According to the inventive method for testing gas valves for tightness, at least one second gas valve is checked with regard to tightness when starting the burner, and at least one first gas valve is checked with regard to tightness when shutting down the burner. As a result, the time required for testing for tightness is reduced.
