<p>1301153 Polymerizing a vinyl ester mixture in cellulosic material LONZA Ltd 3 June 1970 [4 June 1969] 26764/70 Heading C3G An abrasion-resistant cellulose-containing material is obtained by polymerizing a mixture of vinyl acetate or vinyl propionate with a vinyl ester of a strongly branched carboxylic acid in situ in the cellulose-containing material. The vinyl ester has the formula in which R 1 , R 2 , and R 3 are identical or different straight chain alkyl groups, preferably methyl groups. The mixture may also contain a crosslinking agent, e.g. divinyl benzene or methylenebis-acrylamide and an additional polar monomer such as maleic acid or anhydride, acrylic acid or acrylamide. Examples are given in which (i) ocoumÚ wood is (a) impregnated with a mixture of vinyl acetate and vinyl esters of C 9 to C 11 - branched carboxylic acids (mixture A), or a mixture of vinyl acetate and vinyl esters of C 10 -branched carboxylic acids (mixture B) or a mixture of vinylpropionate and said vinyl esters of C 9 to C 11 -carboxylic acids and subjected to Co<SP>60</SP>-gamma radiation or electron radiation or (b) impregnated with mixture A containing also benzoyl peroxide and heated; (ii) oak or beech wood or coloured and printed paper is impregnated with mixture B and subjected to said gamma-radiation and (iii) fibre board is impregnated with mixture A and subjected to said gamma-radiation.</p> |
