A method of operating a liquid crystal display (LCD) device (1), which is back-lighted by a cold-cathode tube (13), is based on measurement of the ambient temperature of the cold-cathode tube, and increasing the power supply to the cold-cathode tube (13) in relation to the power supply during normal operation, whenever the ambient temperature falls short of a threshold value. The power supply level is reduced, after a given period of time or when a definite temperature is attained, to the power supply level required for normal operation or drive.
