A locking and unlocking unit of a roll bar in an electromechanical rollover protection system of a vehicle has a solenoid (10), a locking device (3) and a retaining rod (1) with retaining device (2). The locking device has two latches (4,7) arranged in working fashion one behind the other. They are released by the solenoid. A permanent magnet element (19) after release of the locking device holds this in the unlocked position. A retaining latch locks the retaining rod and a locking latch locking the retaining latch carries the permanent magnet element. A spring element pre-tensions the retaining latch in the opening direction and the locking latch in the closing direction.
