A handheld electronic stethoscope includes a graphic display (4) displaying interpretive information indicative of the type, intensity, and timing of heart or respiratory sounds detected by the stethoscope. In the case of a text message display, upon input of a complete frame of data from a sensor (14), a signal processor (18) in the stethoscope performs a frequency domain conversion of the frame, correlates features in the most recently frequency-converted frames with heart or respiratory sounds, derives variables relevant to the heart or respiratory sounds, and stores (23) the variables in display tables together with pointers to pre-stored text strings (22) for real-time display as text messages. An audio output (24) may also be included. A connection to a modem or computer may also be included to provide facility for local archival or communicated to a remote medical facility for archival and monitoring purposes.
