<p>A compact multi-stage oil-water separator (20) has application in removing oily contaminants from bilge water in ships. The oil-water separator has a final stage (36) in which the flow of fluid is repeatedly reversed. The separator preferably has two toroidal mechanical separation stages (31, 32) on the suction side of a feed pump (27), and a cyclone separation stage (34) and a polishing stage (36) on the output side of the pump. The cyclone separation and polishing stage (34, 36) may be located inside the mechanical separation stages (31, 32) for compactness. The oil-water separator (20) has built-in-fail-safe operation to prevent the accidental discharge of water in the case of contaminated sensors. The oil-water separator (20) has a novel stage (36) that avoids the need for standard coalescing filters.</p> |
