The roll in the region of the workpiece (2) moves radially so the material is displaced and the wall thickness is reduced. The roll also moves axially to vary the wall thickness. The resultant gear element has a thickened rim with an essentially rectangular cross section, and a wall thickness which successively diminishes towards the center of the region of the workpiece.
