The access control station is in the form of a turnstile (4) that has a number of projecting arms (10) that have to be indexed to allow an individual to pass through. The release mechanism is controlled by a built in module that responds to signals from a non contact data carrier. The carrier can be in the form of a card or wrist worn element. This is detected by an antenna (13,14) in the turnstile unit.
