A desktop machine has a base and an actuating arm pivotally mounted relative to the base. The base defines a cavity (10) having an open mouth (11) and a cover (17) is provided which may be positioned to close the open mouth (11). At least a region (19) of the cover is formed of a transparent material. Means are provided to retain a card or the like against an interior part of the transparent region (19) of the cover (17) so that, when the card is in position, it may be viewed from the exterior of the machine.
