A nose for an aerodynamic surface, comprises a supporting structure of fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) with longitudinal channels and an outer, perforated skin. The supporting structure consists of an inner laminate of resin-impregnated fibres, tubes (3) and channels (7) and an outer laminate. The perforated outer skin (4) is connected to the supporting structure by spacers and an inner skin (9) to form a stable, rigid metal structure. Nose manufacture involves separate processes for forming the supporting structure and the metal structure. The supporting structure is made by: (a) placing an inner laminate on a positive bonding tool; (b) locating prefabricated tubes (3) and channels (7) with separating spacers on the inner laminate; (c) injecting a filling material between the tubes; (d) covering the tubes and channels with an outer laminate; (e) curing the resin of both laminates in an autoclave; (f) boring suction holes through the outer laminate and tubes. Production of the metal structure involves: (a) forming the inner skin (9) according to the nose contour; (b) cutting oversized strip-like ribs (8) and connecting to the inner skin by high temperature soldering or laser beam welding; (c) milling the ribs to the appropriate contour; (d) forming the outer skin(4) and soldering at high temperature onto the ribs; (e) boring suction holes to correspond with those in the supporting structure. |
