PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel for hot forging, having sufficient tensile strength and yield strength and high toughness even in the part practically free from working in particular, while obviating the necessity of aging treatment as well as control of cooling velocity after hot forging. SOLUTION: This steel has a composition consisting of, by mass, >0.05-<0.15% C, 0.005-2.0% Si, >2.0-5.0% Mn, 0.02-0.50% S, >1.0-4.0% Cu, 0.1-4.0% Ni, 0.05-5.0% Cr, 0.0002-0.1% Al, 0.001-0.1% Ti, 0.0003-0.03% B, 0.0010-0.0200% N, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities.
