PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect the unbalanced state of the wash in a washing/ spin basket, in a washing machine determining the degree of unbalance of the wash when the washing/spin basket is drivingly rotated, by detecting the degree of fluctuation of the rotational number of the washing/spin basket while the torque of a motor is small. SOLUTION: A washing/spin basket 2 is freely rotationally placed within a water receiving basket 1, and an agitator 3 is freely rotationally placed within the washing/spin basket 2. The washing/spin basket 2 or agitator 3 is driven by a motor 7 and the action of the motor 7 or the like is controlled by a control means. In a drying stroke in which the washing/spin basket 2 is driven, the control means increases the rotational number of the washing/spin basket 2 to a first rotational number lower than a drying steady-state rotational number and then decelerates the washing/spin basket 2 to a second rotational number lower than the first rotational number, and after the amount of unbalance of the wash in the washing/spin basket 2 is determined from the fluctuation of the rotational number detected during rotation at roughly the second rotational number, the rotational number is increased to the drying steady-state rotational number.
