PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To securely detect leakage of waste gas from an exhaust passage extending from a hot water heater to a main duct passage for exhausting waste gas to the outside through an exhaust hood. SOLUTION: There are provided exhaust gas overflow temperature detection means 11 for detecting temperature of gas going into and out of an air intake port 8 and a threshold variable setting section in a control device 20. The threshold variable setting section variably sets a threshold Tsh in response to a value corresponding to the amount of combustion heat. Detection temperature by the exhaust overflow temperature detection means 11 is compared with the variably set threshold Tsh, and when the detection temperature exceeds the threshold value Tsh, it is judged that heat of exhaust from the hot water heater 1 is detected by the exhaust overflow temperature detection means 11, and hence judged that there is a possibility of leakage of exhaust from the air intake port 8 and combustion of the hot water heater 1 is interrupted. Hereby, exhaust leaks without interruption to fill a room therewith. It is thus possible to avoid dangerous conditions such as poisoning by carbon monoxide.
