PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an antiferroelectric liq. crystal compsn. which is excellent in uniform alignability and exhibits a small spontaneous polarization by incorporating at least one bridged cyclic compd. into the same and to obtain a large- area, high-accuracy, high-performance liq. crystal element by using the same. SOLUTION: It is pref. from the viewpoint of the temp. width, miscibility, viscosity, and compoundability of the liq. crystal phase that the bridged cyclic compd. is a compd. having a bicyclic or tricyclic structure, such as represented by the formula: R1-A1-B1-A2-B2-A3-B3-A4-R2 (wherein R1 and R2 are each independently H or 1-20C linear or branched alkyl; A1, A2, and A3 are each independently a single bond, an optionally substd. 1,4-phenylene, pyridine-2,5-diyl, or 1,4- cyclohexylene group, or the like; A4 is norbornane-2,5-diyl, adamantane-1,4-diyl, or the like; and B1, B2, and B3 are each independently a single bond, -COO-, -OOC-, -CH2O-, -CH2CH2-, -CH=CH-, or the like).
