PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the rust-preventive agent for treating a metal surface, which is capable of forming a rust preventive layer excellent in corrosion resistance, and the surface-treated metal product excellent in corrosion resistance. SOLUTION: The rust-preventive agent for treating a metal surface has a composition containing a water-soluble resin and water as main components, wherein at least one selected from the group of thiosulfuric acid ion, sulfurous acid ion and bisulfurous acid ion is contained in an amount of 0.1-10 wt.% based on the solid resin content. The surface-treated metal product excellent in corrosion resistance can be produced by coating the metal surface with the rust-preventive agent and drying.
