PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To selectively produce a hydrocarbon useful as a synthetic raw material for a profen-based analgesic by using a cheap raw material by carrying out dehydrogenation or the like of a specific hydrocarbon, and subjecting the product to distillation. SOLUTION: A mixture of (A) one of compounds of formula I (R is CH2 or the like), [e.g. 1-(m-ethylphenyl)-1-phenylethane] with (B) one of compounds of formula II, [e.g. 1-(o-ethylpheny)-1-phenylethane] is subjected to dehydrogenation or oxidative dehydrogenation, and the product is distilled to provide a compound of formula III (R is CH2 or the like; R1 is vinyl or ethyl), [e.g. 1-(m- vinylphenyl)-1-phenylethylene]. The mixture preferably contains 1-40 wt.% component B based on the total of the components A and B. A dehydrogenation catalyst such as the iron oxide-based one can be used in the dehydrogenation reaction. The reaction pressure is preferably a reduced pressure to 0.3 MPa, and the reaction temperature is preferably 550-650 deg.C.
