PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a filter for a molten metal which causes no secondary pollution of molten aluminum even in the case of being brought into contact with molten aluminum, has high and even bonding force in the aggregate in the whole body of the filter and high strength, and is stably usable for a long duration. SOLUTION: This filter material is made of a sintered body of a mixture containing 100 pts.wt. of 1 or more aggregate particles selected from alumina particle and a group of spinel crystal particles of Al2O3-MgO and 5-25 pts.wt. of a frit binder obtained by melting a mixture of 60-90 wt.% of spinel crystal powder of Al2O3-MgO, 5-12 wt.% of B2O3, and not more than 30 wt.% of one or more oxides selected from Al2O3, MgO, and TiO2 and quenching the melted mixture.
