PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an antiferroelectric chiral smectic liq. crystal compsn. which is excellent in uniform alignability and exhibits a small spontaneous polarization by incorporating a compd. having a specific terminal structure into the same and to obtain a large-area, high-accurcy, high-performance liq. crystal element by using the same. SOLUTION: This liq. crystal compsn. contains at least one compd. having a terminal structure represented by the formula: -R-A (wherein R is a 3-20C alkylene group, of which at least one -CH2- group may be substd. by -O-, -S-, -CO-, -CH=CH-, or -C≡C- provided heteroatoms are not adjacent to each other; and A is a 1-phenyl, 1-cyclohexyl, or 2-thiophenyl group which is optionally mono- or disubstd. by F, Cl, Br, CH3, or CF3). Pref., the content of the compd. having the terminal structure in the compsn. is 1-50 wt.%.
