PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high strength metallic porous body small in pore diameter, high in porosity, low in closed porosity and having a three dimensional structure having high communicating ability and the producing method. SOLUTION: A metallic porous body 1 is obtained by kneading metallic powder and a binder in a specific volume ratio at a temp. exceeding the m.p. of the binder and on the other hand, kneading water soluble powder having higher m.p. than the binder with a water soluble polymer material having lower m.p. than the binder in a specific volume ratio at a temp. below the m.p. of the water soluble powder and exceeding the m.p. of the water soluble polymer material and after that, kneading 10-40 vol.% metallic powder and binder with 60-90 vol.% water soluble powder and water soluble polymer material at a temp. exceeding the m.p. of the binder and below the m.p. of the water soluble powder to prepare a kneaded body, molding the kneaded body into a prescribed shape, dipping the resultant molding into hot water to extract and remove the water soluble component to form a porous body and degreasing and firing the porous body.
