PHENOL NOVOLAK TYPE EPOXY COMPOUND

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a compound which has a high melting point and excellent storage stability and does not suffer blocking by reacting a specific novolak resin with a specific polyhydric phenol and a specific epihalohydrin to allow condensation and subsequently treating it with an alkali hydroxide. SOLUTION: A novolak resin represented by formula I is reacted with at least one of polyhydric phenols represented by formulae II-VII and an epihalohydrin to effect condensation of at least one of the polyhydric phenols represented by formulae II-VII, and is treated with an alkali hydroxide. In the formulae, R1 is H, CH3; n>=0; R2 is R1; and (m) is (n). This phenol novolak type epoxy compound is also obtainable by condensing at least one of polyhydric phenols represented by formulae II-VII with a precursor obtained by reacting a novolak resin represented by formula I with an epihalohydrin followed by treatment with an alkali hydroxide. The compound exhibits excellent thermally stabilizing effects in thermoforming and processing of a synthetic resin.
