PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound having a biphenyl skeleton in the molecule, useful as a component for a liquid crystal material, etc., capable of providing a liquid crystal element having wide temperature ranges of SmCA* phase and SmCR* phase, a high speed of response and a large tilt angle. SOLUTION: This compound is shown by the formula R1-X-A1-CH2O-A2-COO- C*H(CF3)-R2 [R1 is a 1-20C alkyl containing one or more CH2 groups substitutable with O groups or the like; X is COO or the like; A1 is a group of formula I; A2 is a group of formula II; L, (m) and (n) are each 0-2; R2 is a group of the formula (CH2)aO(CH2)bH; (a) is 1-4; b>=1; C* is an asymmetric carbon atom] such as 4-(4'-decyl-4-biphenylmethyloxy)benzoic acid (R)-1- trifluoromethyl-4-oxa-1-pentyl ester. The compound is obtained, for example, by reacting a 4'-alkyl-4-biphenylmethyl bromide with a 4-hydroxybenzoic acid ester.
