PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the number of changing the opening degree of a press while maintaining the accuracy in the width after horizontal rolling following on edging at the time of edging a tapered slab. SOLUTION: At the time of hot edging the tapered slab 1 with the press, the changed position and the amount of change of the opening degree of the press in the longitudinal direction of the slab for coping with the case that the amount of variation of the width at the horizontal rolling following on this edging becomes the correctable max. value by the subsequent horizontal rolling are calculated. Based on the result of this calculation, the edging is executed while changing the opening degree of the press.
