PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high strength gear achieving the strength characteristics required for its tooth face and deddendum. SOLUTION: In the meshing range of the drive side and driven side tooth faces of a gear, carbide with a 5 to 10% area dispersedly precipitates up to a depth of at least 0.2 mm from the outermost layer of the tooth face toward its core, and at the drive and driven side deddendum corner R of the gear, carbide from the outermost layer to the core has an area of 3% at a maximum and dispersedly precipitates in the form of spheres or hemispheres. Nitriding process may be effected so that in the meshing range of the tooth face of the gear, a nitrogen concentration distribution from the outermost layer to the core of the tooth face has a peak of 0.3 wt.% or less, and so that at the deddendum corner R of the gear, a nitrogen concentration distribution from the outermost layer to the core has a peak of 0.3 wt.% or more.
