PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the capacity of a reservoir and an oil tank and to improve a space efficiency in a self pumping type hydraulic shock absorber. SOLUTION: A self pumping type hydraulic shock absorber 1 is provided with an outer cylinder 2 including a small diameter part 2a, a middle diameter part 2b, and a large diameter part 2c around the outer periphery of a cylinder 4. A reservoir 10 communicated with an upper and a lower cylinder chambers 4a and 4b, respectively, is formed between the large diameter part 2c and the cylinder 4. A cylindrical member 22 is fitted around the middle diameter part 2b and the large diameter part 2c of the outer cylinder 2, and an oil tank 27 is formed between the cylindrical member 22 and the outer cylinder 2. A suspension spring 45 (coil spring) is formed between spring seats 40 and 41 fitted to the small diameter part 2a of cylinder 2 and a piston rod 15, respectively. As the reservoir 10 and the oil tank 27 are placed in the inner peripheral part of the suspension spring 45, the capacity of the reservoir 10 and the oil tank 27 can occupy large enough space and thereby the space efficiency can be improved.
